3D artist Ivan Fernandez has recreated the Plaza environment from Half Life 2 in Unreal Engine 4. As such, this fan recreation can give us an idea of what a Half-Life 2 Remake could look like in modern-day engine.
If you'd like to play Star Wars Racer 2018, the Unreal Engine 4 remake of Star Wars Episode 1: Racer, you can download it and start racing now. Hopefully, the additional attention will push Rob. This alone has saved me over 2GB of space on my Mouse Project (from 3.4GB, down to 1.1GB). These folders being ignored represent Cooked content and Built Levels for Unreal Engine 4. They are important, but it is easy to re-cook and re-build levels locally if required via the Unreal Editor, rather than increasing project size massively. In April 2018, we shared a video showcasing the original assets of Half-Life 2 in Unreal Engine 4. Then, in January 2019, we shared some screenshots from an environmental remake in UE4.
Though the artist has used some textures from Quixel megascans directy on Unreal Engine for floors and walls, he also used Substance Painter in order to create some additional textures.
This isn't the first time we see Half Life 2 in Unreal Engine 4. In April 2018, we shared a video showcasing the original assets of Half-Life 2 in Unreal Engine 4. Then, in January 2019, we shared some screenshots from an environmental remake in UE4. And let's not forget that amazing City 17 Apartment Remake that amazed everyone in 2015.
Still, we can safely say that this latest remake is the best we've seen so far. Ivan Fernandez has retained the art style and atmosphere of the original version. At the same time, the artist was able to overhaul the game's graphics with better models, effects and textures.
Unfortunately, this fan remake has not been released to the public. However, we'll be sure to share a download link once – and if – Fernandez releases it.

There are are ton's of architectural program's out there. Autocad, Revit, Vectorworks, Archicad, the list goes on and on.
I for one, had the 'luck' to get familiar with Vectorworks. Using v2016, 2017 and comming year I'll be using 2018.
I must say, it is a pretty good program, but I'm not a big fan. Won't go into details why.
After working a couple of years with VW I wasn't really satisfied with the render quality.
During school I got to work with Artlantis, which provides better renders, but it's just a horrible program performance wise.
After some research I came across Unity & Unreal Engine 4.0 (UE4).
It became pretty clear this was the way to go for me.
How hard could it be? right?
Oh boy, was I wrong.
To save you at least a couple of hours of your life, I'll try to share my findings.
NOTE: the findings below are not the correct way to do this right, It's just to show you what I did, and probably what I did wrong. I learned this myself, the hard way.
So my idea was to build a 'professional' 2D/3D plan in vectorworks, export it to FBX, 3DS whatever and import it into Unreal, because, that's how things should work, right?
Wrong again.
But ok, lets try this anyway.
I opened VW and opened one of my school designs, a self designed kitchen:
So far so good.
One of the advantages of VW is that you have a ton of export options, a lot of which I don't even know what they're good for.
But let's start with an industry standard, export to FBX.
I went with the default settings, and got a the file I wanted.
As a test, I opended the file in Windows' 10 paint 3D:
Looks pretty good. So, we're on to a winner, right?
I opened Unreal Engine 4.0 (4.20.something at the moment) and decided to just import the FBX.
Used default settings, cause why not?
The first indication something wasn't going as planned was this message:
I got about 90 messages, could have been just informative, but I didn't get a good feeling.
I got about 170 different meshes and I decided to just select all meshes and drag them into the viewport.
And to my surprise, it actually worked! hurray for common sense!!
Alas, my victory was short. I quickly noticed a couple of things that weren't correct.
Once the shaders were built, I decided to build the lightning and start from there.
Lightning built:
Aside from the lightning being to dark, it looked like crap.
For instance, the fake lowered ceiling that was supposed to be yellow turned out weird:
Transparant is not yellow.
So I opended this specific mesh in UE4:
To the untrained eye, nothing seems wrong, right?
But the I looked at the bottom:
Hmm, something seems to be missing…
Since I saw a lot of UV error's during import, I opened the UW Map viewer:
Now, I'm not an export on UV mappings, but this seemed of to me.
I examined the material that was automatically applied during export and import.
I noticed that the 2-sided option wasn't enabled, so that must be it. checked the box, rebuilt the lightning and low and behold…
Had to add a spotlight to see the difference, but no longer transparent yellow.
So let's add some more light to see what's missing…
